Raised Intensive Bed Gardening for the Organic Gardener

Raised Intensive Bed gardening is a procedure for the organic gardener that will improve crop yield.  Raised bed gardening has been used for a number years around the world. There are a number of advantages using this procedure.  Growing plants in raised beds for the gardener with heavy, poorly drained soils is a pulse.  Raised bed gardening improves soil condition because the soil does not become packed by foot or equipment travel. Often the gardener tills the soil to prepare a bed for planting year after year. This process establishes a hard pan effect in the planting area.

Raised Intensive Bed gardening avoids that problem. The raised bed places the growing soil above the hard pan providing that over and over tilling is not necessary. The Raised Bed is above the saturation water level this provides a more optimum soil environment for root growth. Better control of  moisture is achieved using this method of gardening. This is very  important for gardening in a dry or wet climate.

Raised bed Gardening using organic material has a definite advantage. Organic material provides for a rich mellow planting bed to plant seeds. The raised bed can easily be spaded without deep tilling. In addition the raised bed makes for easy work for the gardener because of the bed height being above the ground.

Raised bed s make gardening possible on sites where growing plants would otherwise be impossible such as solid rock or roof tops. Terraced raised beds turn hillsides into productive growing areas while reducing soil erosion.Potted plants do well to control erosion.. Pest control is simplified because the plants are more visible to the gardener for inspection. Better root growth from improved soils leads to higher yields.

Raised beds provide the organic gardener with many advantages over the old style gardening techniques. Construction materials for the raised bed framework is nearly unlimited. Wood or concrete are suitable for this. However, rail road ties treated with creosote are harmful to plants humans. Maintenance of plants is easier because the beds are above the walkways, less stooping is required for weeding, watering and other chores.
